How
to Invent: Have 100 Ideas Today - September 2014 - You
can have 100 ideas for new inventions in a few hours' time. Some
of them will seem silly (but might still be marketable), and
some might not work at all when tried. But a few of them -- maybe
even a dozen or more -- will be million-dollar ideas. You probably
won't actually make a million from any of them unless you are
an experienced entrepreneur and marketer, but you'll have your
ideas and the fun that comes from producing them. Here's how.

A Few Crazy Ideas and Questions - There is no
rhyme or reason to the collection of ideas here. They are simply
things I've been thinking about and questions that needed to
be asked. I'll look at aspects of human psychology, the development
of plant people, and why soldiers can't quit their jobs, among
other topics. And please don't complain about the lack of focus
or purpose. This is my own idea-generating exercise, and if it
isn't interesting to you, the little "x" up there to
the right will help... Continue

Can We Domesticate Diseases? - Some parasites,
bacteria and viruses are worse than others that much is
obvious. But why are some worse? Why do some kill the very host
that they rely on for survival while others just cause minor
inconvenience? Its not an easy question to answer, and
each case is different. The many cold viruses, for example, seem
to have found a happy medium. They don't... Continue

This Month's Thought - Subscription governments
would make the so-called social contract explicit and voluntary,
allowing citizens under their jurisdiction to choose the kind
of system they prefer. They might compete for allegiance among
those who live commingled in country's borders, or in special
zones set up for this purpose. The former, which would have residents
living in the same area but with different laws and rules, could
be complicated to arrange, but not impossible. The latter would
mean people have to move to the jurisdiction that has the system
they desire. One key idea here is that the use of power is more
just when the system is truly chosen by those whom are governed.
Others may feel they get to choose now, but I
have no representation in the current system. I didn't choose
this government, and I never agreed to any theoretical "social
contract" which, after all, is nothing more than an invention
of political philosophers designed for the purpose of justifying
the use of force to control others. I like the idea of choosing
not just those who have political power, but also the rules by
which they will govern.
New Medical Ideas - In Malawi Josh Nesbit discovered
two things; in rural areas he got better reception on his cell
phone than he did in California, and some people in those areas
walked as much as 50 miles to see a medic. He started an organization
called Medic Mobile, which uses cheap mobile phones to connect
the rural poor with doctors. Tools have been developed for patients
to explain symptoms and there will soon be diagnostic tools for
using a cell phones light to and camera to remotely check blood
for signs of tuberculosis an malaria.
